It would be utterly ungrateful if we as a citizens of this century do not know / remember Nicola Tesla , an Inventor and a Scientist and a great Electrical Engineer, of this century who was also a down to earth Humanitarian !. Today we are very much dependent on his major invention Alternating Current (AC) that we use to run everything from simple household electrical appliances to mega factories and mills .
Nikola Tesla (1826 To 1943) was born in Serbia ,his father Miutin Tesla was an orthodox priest and mother Djuka Mandic was then an inventor of many house hold appliances. Nikola studied electrical engineering and started his career as an electrical engineer with Budapest based telephone company in 1883.From there he got an insight of building an induction motor based on the principle of rotating magnetic field ( dynamo principle ) . Then he worked for French company where he designed dynamos and with his own interest he built a prototype of dynamo and tested it successfully. But those days nobody in Europe got interested in such radical innovations so he decided to move to America.
In America ,with Charles Batchelor's ( Thomas Edison's close associate) recommendation letter he joined with Thomas Edison to work with him in his lab. Those days Thomas Edison's company generated and distributed DC ( Direct Current ) with huge and expensive machinery . Though Edison’s company generated the high voltage Direct Current based electricity , it was only able to provide power to only few blocks of area and the cost of the DC generation was very high ( till now it is expensive to have such DC generators) .Tesla worked for few years improving DC motors in Edison's lab, but then due to difference of opinion in the matter of generation and efficiency of current ( AC v/s DC) they got separated .
Tesla joined his hands with George Westinghouse ( a capitalist) to start an electrical distribution company which had won a contract to supply electricity against Thomas Edison's Electric company .It was like a war of currents DC v/s AC and finally AC won for the betterment of world as it proved to be inexpensive to generate and can be transmitted to longer distances with less drop in power. Tesla had a childhood dream of harnessing Niagara Fall's power to generate an electricity so in 1895 he built first hydroelectric power plant and went on to demonstrate that an Alternate Current (AC) can be generated with Hydel power system inexpensively.
Apart from invention of Polyphase Alternating Current (AC) , Tesla invented many more useful things to mankind .Following are few to name.
1. AC induction motor: Which is the soul of indusrial motors and all rotary home appliances .
2. Tesla Coil : Used in most of the communication devices.
3. First Invention of X-Ray ( Same time when Roentegen had invented his x-ray devise): Though Tesla's design was much superior he didn't take priority on his invention ,instead he congratulated Roentegen for his discovery ! .
4. Invention of Radio waves propagation in 1896 : Much before Marconi as we know as inventor of present day Radio.
5. Ground breaking invention to transmit electricity without cables : During this testing Tesla was able to send electrical waves for miles through a special antenna without any wires or cables!.
6. In one of his specialized experiments based on Terrestrial Stationary Waves : He was even able to transmit electricity through earth safely for a distance of about 40 KM and lit 200 bulbs !
Nikola Tesla was born genius and had a nobel vision of distributing electricity for the whole humanity for Free ! . Later in early 1900 he continued with his brilliant inventions and was co-funded by three of the famous bankers in America who literally threw away his long time partner George Westinghouse by un-ethical means .Later Tesla parted with these bankers since they were against the good intention of Tesla to distribute electricity to everyone for a free. In later years he traveled all over the world to educate people in the field of electro magnetism and their pros and cons .
Though Tesla invented many of the electromagnetic devices and systems ,he was aware of the ill-effects of these on living beings .So it is said that during his last years he even invented instruments and various methods to counter-act the bad effects of EMF (Electromagnetic Fields) which are low frequency magnetic and electric fields radiating from domestic AC power line( wires) and appliances and EMR (Electro Magnetic Radiations) a high frequency magnetic and electric waves moving through the space generated by Radar, TV towers, Cell/Mobile towers, Microwaves, and high tension power lines. Some companies are still manufacturing these inventions for EMF/EMR safety invented by Tesla.
A honorary doctorate was awarded to Tesla in 1894 by Columbia and Yale University. And in 1912 Nobel prize was announced jointly to Edison and Tesla for their marvels in the field of physics ,but none of them turned up to receive it as they don’t wanted to share the prize with each other !.Tesla remained as bachelor till the end of his life and dedicated all his time and efforts to most valuable discoveries ( 111 patents are in his name) for the betterment of his fellow mankind. He left this world on 7th January 1943 in Newyork in an car accident ( later it was said that his death was conspired). With great sense of gratitude, please join me in thanking Nicola Tesla for his in-valuable inventions and discoveries for humanity on most of which currently we are dwelling our lives comfortably !.
